Photographing the Magic of Mountain Living in Spanish Peaks

Big Sky Journal HOME - April 2024

General Contractor - Teton Heritage Builders

Architect - Reid Smith Architects

As an architectural photographer, some shoots stay with you long after you’ve packed up your gear, and this modern home in Big Sky’s Spanish Peaks Mountain Club was one of those memorable experiences. The home, featured in Big Sky Journal Home, embodies the essence of Big Sky Country - views for days, sleek modern design, and a sense of home.

On the day of the shoot, an unexpected storm rolled in, adding a layer of complexity to capturing the scene. The light shifted throughout the day as heavy clouds gathered and moved through, transforming the mountain backdrop into a dramatic, moody setting. The natural light became both a challenge and an opportunity, and I had to adjust my approach frequently. Shooting with this dynamic lighting was demanding but also rewarding. Every photo seemed to take on a unique tone, emphasizing the home’s connection to the unpredictable beauty of nature.

Adding to the shoot’s character was the presence of the homeowner's dog, a friendly surprise that brought life to the scenes - except when he stole and ate my lunch, ha! The dog roamed freely, and it quickly became clear that he needed a cameo in the photos. He posed—becoming a fitting model that added warmth and personality.

Photography has the power to tell a story, and on this shoot, I felt that story as much as I captured it. The way the house fit into the landscape, the weather playing its role in creating atmosphere, and the dog bringing a touch of playfulness—it all combined to make this shoot unforgettable. Spanish Peaks Mountain Club may be renowned for its real estate, but this home, in particular, spoke to the connection between architecture and the outdoor surroundings, and I’m grateful I was able to capture a piece of that.
