Photographing a Modern-Traditional Masterpiece Outside Missoula
Big Sky Journal HOME - April 2024
Interior Design - James Thomas Interiors
In September of 2023, I had the privilege of photographing a stunning home just outside of Missoula, Montana. The project was a blend of modern and traditional design, featuring large open windows that filled the home with natural light and an incredible outdoor space perfect for entertaining. With a fire pit, grill, and sweeping views, the backyard was the kind of place that begged to be photographed.
The shoot took place as the leaves were just beginning to turn, adding a warm, golden hue to the surrounding landscape. As a photographer, lighting is everything, and this home was a dream to capture. The large windows not only showcased the stunning outdoor views but also allowed natural light to pour into the home. I made it a priority to balance this light with the cozy interior, highlighting the rich textures and the thoughtful pops of color that tied the design together.
This project was a collaboration with James Thomas Interiors, a Chicago-based design team I’ve had the pleasure of working with on multiple occasions. Their designs consistently strike a perfect balance between tradition and modernity, and this home was no exception. What I truly appreciate about this team—beyond their incredible talent—is their hands-on approach to every shoot. They flew in specifically for this project, and their presence made the day not only productive but also incredibly enjoyable. Their energy, creativity, and attention to detail elevate every photoshoot, and their positive personalities make the long hours fly by.
Teamwork played a huge role in this shoot, and seeing the final product featured in Big Sky Journal HOME was a proud moment for everyone involved. Collaborating with such skilled designers, builders, and other creatives reminds me why I love this job. Projects like these, where every detail is intentional and every effort is collaborative, lead to photographs that truly capture the essence of the space.
I’m looking forward to future opportunities to work with James Thomas Interiors, and I can’t wait to see what they dream up next. Until then, I’ll keep savoring the chance to photograph spaces like this—homes where design and setting come together so seamlessly, it feels like magic behind the lens.
